Srinagar/Jammu, January 11, 2026 — The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a fresh update for Jammu & Kashmir, predicting a shift in weather patterns as the region continues to battle an intense dry cold wave. While the plains remain dry, a weak Western Disturbance is expected to bring isolated light precipitation over higher reaches between January 16 and January 20, 2026, according to the latest outlook.
Intense Cold Wave: Dal Lake Freezes as Temperatures Plunge
The valley is currently in the heart of Chilla-i-Kalan, the 40-day period of extreme winter. Srinagar recorded a minimum temperature of –5.2°C on the night of January 10–11 (recorded on Jan 11), a slight rise from the season’s lowest of –6.0°C earlier this week.
The persistent sub-zero conditions have led to the partial freezing of the iconic Dal Lake and water taps across several parts of the Kashmir Valley.
Current Temperature Snapshot (Jan 11, 2026)
- Srinagar: –5.2°C (Intense cold persists)
- Shopian: –8.2°C (Coldest in the Valley)
- Pahalgam: –7.6°C
- Gulmarg: –6.8°C
- Jammu: 7.0°C (Dense fog prevailing)
IMD Rainfall & Snowfall Alert: What to Expect
According to the latest IMD Meteorological Centre Srinagar bulletin, the prolonged dry spell may see a brief interruption due to weak Western Disturbances.
Forecast for January 12 – January 18, 2026:
- Jan 12–15: Mainly dry weather across J&K. Dense fog warnings remain in place for the plains of the Jammu division, likely affecting morning travel.
- Jan 16–17: A weak Western Disturbance may cause generally cloudy skies with isolated light rain or snow over higher reaches of North and Central Kashmir.
- Outlook around Jan 20: Another system is possible, which could bring light precipitation to parts of the Western Himalayan region, but intensity and coverage will be clearer with updated forecasts.
Impact on Agriculture and Health
The ongoing dry spell continues to worry the horticulture sector and water managers. Experts caution that without adequate snowfall during Chilla-i-Kalan, groundwater recharge and water availability could remain under stress in the coming months.
Health & Travel Advisory
- Respiratory Alert: Doctors report an increase in dry cough, breathing discomfort, and skin problems. Residents are advised to stay hydrated and use heating devices with proper ventilation.
- Highway Visibility: Commuters on the Jammu–Srinagar National Highway should be alert for near-zero visibility conditions in the Jammu–Udhampur sector during early mornings due to dense fog.
Why This Update Matters
With Chilla-i-Kalan ending on January 30, the window for meaningful snowfall is narrowing. While the upcoming January 16 disturbance is expected to be weak, it represents the first indication of a break in an otherwise stagnant winter pattern.
