Kupwara, Jan 31: A once-promising tourist cafeteria and gazebo at Galganzar Zachaldara in north Kashmir’s Kupwara district have been left in a state of neglect, gradually falling into disrepair due to official inaction.
Situated at the foothills of the scenic Bangus Valley, the cafeteria was constructed a decade ago but has yet to be handed over to the Tourism Department. Local residents, who had high hopes for its potential, are now dismayed by its abandonment.
“We were thrilled when construction began, believing it would boost tourism. However, despite being completed years ago, it remains unused and deteriorating,” said Farooq Bhat, a local resident.
The facility, built at a significant cost, has suffered damage over time, with broken windows and shattered glass panes due to vandalism. “If it had been maintained, it could have been a major attraction for tourists and a source of livelihood for locals,” added Bhat.
Strategically located along the Handwara-Rajwar-Bangus road, the cafeteria could serve as a crucial rest stop for travelers heading to Bangus Valley. Residents believe that with proper management, the site could host small stalls and create job opportunities for the local youth.
“The place has immense potential. If restored, it could benefit both tourists and residents by generating employment,” said Syed Imtiyaz, a youth from Rajpora Rajwar, Handwara.
District Development Council (DDC) Member Rajwar, Sulaiman Mir, acknowledged the issue, stating that not only the Zachaldara cafeteria but also a tourist hut at Wader Balla and Wader Payeen have been left unattended. He expressed optimism that this year would bring much-needed renovations.
“I hope the concerned authorities take action soon so that these facilities can be put to proper use for visiting tourists,” Mir added.
Locals urge the administration to intervene before these structures deteriorate beyond repair, emphasizing their potential to enhance tourism and local livelihoods.
