New Delhi: As the world rings in 2026 tonight, millions of smartphone users might wake up to a silent phone tomorrow morning.
In a major technical update, WhatsApp is ending support for several older Android and iPhone models starting January 1, 2026. If your device is on the “end-of-life” list, you will no longer be able to send messages, make calls, or view status updates after the clock strikes midnight.
According to the official WhatsApp Supported Devices FAQ, this move is necessary to improve security and support new features that older operating systems can no longer handle.
Is Your Phone on the Block List?
The new update specifically targets devices running on outdated software.
- For Android Users: If your phone is running on Android 5.0 (Lollipop) or older, WhatsApp will stop working.
- For iPhone Users: Support is being withdrawn for any device running iOS 15.1 or lower.
List of Popular Phones Losing Support
If you are still using one of these iconic devices without a software upgrade, it is time to buy a new phone. As reported by The Economic Times Tech, the following popular models will be hit hardest:
- Apple: iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus, iPhone 5S.
- Samsung: Galaxy S4, Galaxy Note 3, Galaxy S4 Mini.
- Others: LG G2, HTC One M8, Moto G (1st Gen), Sony Xperia Z1.
(Note: If you have a newer model but haven’t updated your software in years, you might also face interruptions. Go to Settings > Software Update immediately.)
Why Is WhatsApp Doing This?
Every year, Meta reviews the oldest devices with the fewest users to phase out support. These older phones lack the security architecture to protect your chats from modern cyber threats. By cutting them off, WhatsApp ensures the app remains safe and fast for the remaining 99% of users.
What Happens If You Don’t Upgrade?
From tomorrow, you might see a screen saying “This app is no longer compatible with your device.” You won’t lose your account, but you won’t be able to access it until you log in from a newer device.
- Quick Tip: Back up your chats to Google Drive or iCloud tonight before access is cut off.
FAQs
No, your account and chats are safe on the server (if backed up). However, you cannot access them until you switch to a supported phone.
No. This isn’t about the app version; it’s about your phone’s Operating System. If your phone is too old to handle the new Android/iOS, the app won’t open.
WhatsApp has already ended support for the original KaiOS-based JioPhone. Ensure you are using a newer model.
