Severe winter fog disrupted air travel in the national capital as low visibility conditions forced airlines to cancel and delay several flights at Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA).
According to airport officials, 97 flights were cancelled while over 200 services faced delays, mainly during the early morning hours when visibility dropped sharply.
What Happened at Delhi Airport
The disruption affected both arrivals and departures:
- 48 incoming flights were cancelled
- 49 outgoing flights were called off
- More than 200 flights were delayed, with some passengers facing extended waiting times
Air traffic control operations slowed as visibility levels fell below safe limits for smooth take-offs and landings.
Airlines Issue Advisories
Major carriers, including IndiGo and Air India, advised passengers to:
- Check flight status before leaving for the airport
- Allow extra time for check-in and security
- Stay alert for rescheduling or rebooking updates
The airport operator said operations gradually stabilised as visibility improved later in the day.
Fog Impact Extends Beyond Flights
The dense fog is part of a wider winter weather pattern across north India, also affecting:
- Train services, with several running late
- Road traffic, due to reduced visibility
- Air quality, which remained poor in parts of Delhi
Authorities expect foggy conditions to persist over the next few days, especially during late night and early morning hours.
Travel Tips for Passengers
If you’re flying to or from Delhi during the fog season:
- Check airline apps or official websites before travel
- Reach the airport early to manage possible delays
- Keep alternative travel plans in mind during peak fog hours
Bottom Line
Dense fog once again highlighted winter travel challenges in Delhi, leading to widespread flight cancellations and delays. Passengers are advised to remain cautious, stay updated with airline advisories, and plan journeys carefully until weather conditions improve.
Disclaimer: Flight schedules and weather conditions may change rapidly. Travellers are advised to confirm updates with airlines or airport authorities before planning their journey.
