Electricity bills in Uttar Pradesh could soon become more expensive due to the implementation of the Time of Day (TOD) tariff system across the state. This new pricing model will introduce different electricity rates for day and night, potentially causing domestic consumers to see a rise in their bills by 10 to 20 percent.
Currently, the TOD system is already in place for heavy and small industries. However, starting April 1, 2025, it will extend to all consumers. As a result, households may face higher electricity charges, with the potential for a 10 to 20 percent increase in their monthly bills.
Consumer Council to Challenge the Rule in Court
Awadhesh Kumar Verma, President of the Consumer Council, has voiced strong opposition to the TOD rule, stating that it will not be allowed to stand. He confirmed that a legal battle will be launched to challenge the policy.
Energy Department’s Justification
The Energy Department, however, argues that the new system could benefit consumers in the long run. By incentivizing reduced electricity use during peak hours, the department believes that consumers will be able to lower their electricity expenses overall.
Rising Consumer Concerns
The announcement has sparked concerns among consumers, with many expressing skepticism about the policy. One anonymous consumer pointed out that the rule seems unjust, fearing it will place more financial strain on the public while benefiting the government. As the news spreads, there is growing uncertainty about how this change will impact household budgets.
