Gold has reached an all-time high of USD 2,859 per ounce (28.34 gm), marking a significant 40% surge in price over the last year. This sharp increase highlights the growing demand for safe-haven assets as global economic and trade uncertainties intensify.

The price surge is driven by multiple factors, including a fresh decline in US Treasury bond yields and concerns over the potential impact of trade policies proposed by former US President Donald Trump. As these uncertainties loom, investors are turning to gold as a stable investment option.

Ajay Kedia, Director of Kedia Advisory, commented on the historic rise, noting that gold’s appeal has been bolstered by both the decline in bond yields and worries over economic risks tied to Trump’s tariff proposals. “Gold is emerging as the go-to asset for investors seeking stability amid the unpredictability surrounding future trade policies,” Kedia remarked.

The drop in US bond yields has reduced the opportunity cost of holding gold, which doesn’t generate interest, making it a more attractive investment. At the same time, Trump’s tariff proposals have sparked fears of trade disruptions, prompting further movement toward gold as a safe bet.

In addition, speculation about potential interest rate cuts by the Federal Reserve has contributed to the climb in gold prices. Trump’s calls for lower borrowing costs have raised expectations that the Fed might act soon, adding to the demand for gold. Additionally, easing inflation in the US has fueled speculation that rate cuts could be imminent.

Jateen Trivedi, VP Research Analyst at LKP Securities, highlighted the recent developments in the domestic market, noting a strong performance in the Indian gold market as well. “Gold traded positively in the MCX, with a Rs 500 gain at Rs 81,400, as investors positioned themselves against potential changes in import duties. There’s a significant divergence between Comex and MCX, with domestic gold rallying 2.5% last week while Comex gained just 0.5%. Rs 79,500 is acting as a key support level in the domestic market, with Rs 82,000 representing the next major resistance,” Trivedi explained.

Gold’s role as a hedge against inflation and economic instability has never been more evident. As global markets react to shifting monetary policies and trade concerns, demand for gold continues to rise. Investors are keeping a close eye on upcoming Federal Reserve decisions and key economic data, which could further influence the trajectory of gold prices in the months ahead.
