Gulmarg/Tangmarg | Jan 24, 2026: The rush to see the “Winter Wonderland” turned into a test of patience this Saturday. A massive traffic jam has paralyzed the Tangmarg-Gulmarg road, where heavy frost and compacted snow have turned the incline into a skating rink.

Officials report that hundreds of vehicles are stranded, primarily because many drivers attempted the climb without essential anti-skid chains.

The Chaos: Vehicles Skidding & Stalling

  • The Cause: Following Friday’s heavy snowfall, a severe drop in night temperature froze the slush on the road into “Black Ice.” Vehicles without chains lost traction on the steep curves, blocking the narrow carriageway for hours.
  • Police Action: J&K Police and Traffic officials are strictly stopping all vehicles at Tangmarg. Only vehicles with anti-skid chains or 4×4 capabilities are allowed to proceed.
  • Tourist Spirit: Despite the deadlock, visuals from the spot showed tourists stepping out of their cars to take selfies in the snow, turning the stalled highway into a temporary picnic spot.

Official Advisory: Do Not Drive Without Chains

The Traffic Police Rural Kashmir has issued a strict warning for all commuters:

  1. Mandatory Gear: No vehicle will be allowed beyond Tangmarg without anti-skid chains.
  2. Time Restriction: Commuters are advised to avoid travel during early morning and late evening hours when black ice formation is at its peak.
  3. Alternative: Tourists are urged to park their personal cars at Tangmarg and hire local registered sumos/taxis, as these drivers are experienced in navigating the icy terrain.

Key Weather Highlights

  • Temperature: Gulmarg recorded a bone-chilling -12°C last night.
  • Forecast: Dry but freezing weather will continue for the next 24 hours. The ice will not melt naturally.
  • Status: Road clearance machinery is active, but the sheer volume of tourist traffic is hampering operations.

FAQ Section

Q: Is the road to Gulmarg open right now?

A: Yes, the road is technically open, but movement is extremely slow. Strict restrictions apply: Only vehicles with chains are being permitted to proceed.

Q: Can I drive my personal car to Gulmarg?

A: Only if you have anti-skid chains and experience driving on ice. If not, park at Tangmarg and hire a local cab to avoid getting stuck and blocking the road for others.
