Indian Railways is set to make history with its first hydrogen-powered train, which will be the world’s longest and most powerful. Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnav announced in Rajya Sabha that this train will be developed using completely indigenous technology, marking a major step toward clean and green energy.

🔋 How Powerful Will It Be?

  • Existing Hydrogen Trains (Germany, France, Sweden, China) generate 500-600 horsepower.
  • India’s Hydrogen Train will generate up to 1200 horsepower, making it twice as powerful.

🛠️ How is It Being Developed?

  • Retrofitment of Hydrogen Fuel Cells on Diesel Electric Multiple Unit (DEMU) rakes.
  • Railway Research Design and Standards Organization (RDSO) has finalized its specifications.
  • Integrated hydrogen production, storage & distribution facility will be set up for refueling.
  • Safety approvals are being sought from the Petroleum and Explosives Safety Organization (PESO).

🌍 India Joins the Global League

So far, only four countries—Germany, France, Sweden, and China—have developed hydrogen trains. With this project, India will not only join this elite group but also surpass them in power and efficiency.

🌱 A Step Towards Green Energy

This initiative aligns with Indian Railways’ commitment to clean energy and reducing dependence on fossil fuels. It marks a significant move towards a sustainable future and positions India as a global leader in hydrogen-powered rail technology.
