Mumbai/New Delhi: As you pull out your phone to make the first payment of 2026, be aware that the rules governing Unified Payments Interface (UPI) have changed significantly overnight.
The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), in consultation with the RBI, has implemented several major changes effective from today, January 1, 2026, aimed at improving security and convenience.
Here is a simple breakdown of what has changed for the common user.
1. Higher Limits for Hospitals & Education (Good News!)
In a major relief for families, the daily transaction limit for specific sectors has been drastically increased.
- The Change: You can now make UPI payments of up to ₹5 Lakh in a single transaction to verified merchants in the Healthcare (Hospitals) and Education (enool/College Fees) sectors.
- Previous Limit: The general cap was ₹1 Lakh per day. This change makes emergencies and fee payments much easier.
2. The “Inactive ID” Cleanup (Urgent Check)
Did you have an old UPI ID you haven’t used in over a year? It might be gone today.
- The Rule: As per NPCI’s directive, payment apps (Google Pay, PhonePe, Paytm, etc.) were instructed to deactivate UPI IDs that have had zero transactions (debit or credit) for one year as of December 31, 2025.
- Why? To prevent misuse of dormant accounts.
- Action: If your secondary ID has stopped working, you will need to re-register it in your app.
3. 4-Hour Time Limit for New Users (Security Measure)
If you are creating a new UPI account today or changing your device/mobile number:
- The Rule: You will face a temporary transaction limit of ₹5,000 for the first 24 hours.
- Why? This is an anti-fraud measure introduced by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) to prevent immediate siphoning of funds after SIM swapping or device theft.
4. Debunking the “Tax on UPI” Rumor
A viral message claims that a 1.1% charge will be levied on all UPI payments from today. This is FALSE for normal users.
- The Truth: The interchange fee is only for merchants receiving payments over ₹2,000 via Prepaid Payment Instruments (PPI) like wallets.
- For You: Bank-to-bank UPI transactions remain completely free for customers.
What Happens Next?
- Check Your Apps: Open your payment apps today to ensure your primary UPI ID is active.
- Update Apps: Ensure you are running the latest version of your banking apps to support the new higher limits for hospitals.
