Following light snowfall and sub-zero temperatures overnight in the Banihal sector, the J&K Traffic Police has issued an urgent advisory for New Year’s Day travelers. The highway is open, but with major restrictions to manage the heavy rush of tourists leaving Kashmir after New Year celebrations.

Here is the critical traffic plan effective for the next 24 hours.

The Main Advisory: Srinagar to Jammu Traffic Allowed

Today, subject to fair weather and good road conditions, Light Motor Vehicles (LMVs) – including private cars and tourist cabs – will be allowed to move from Srinagar towards Jammu ONLY.

  • Why One-Way? Authorities are prioritizing the clearance of thousands of tourists who are scheduled to depart the valley today.
  • No Traffic from Jammu: No LMVs will be allowed to move from Jammu or Udhampur towards Srinagar today.

Critical Timing & Cut-offs

Travelers must adhere to strict timing to avoid getting stranded in dangerous avalanche-prone zones after dark.

  • Departure from Srinagar (Pantha Chowk/Peaks): Vehicles must cross this point between 06:00 AM to 11:00 AM only.
  • Warning: No vehicle will be allowed to proceed towards Jammu after the 11:00 AM cut-off under any circumstances.

Danger Zones: Slippery Roads Alert

The stretch between Navyug Tunnel (Qazigund side) and Banihal is reported to be highly slippery due to frozen frost and hard-packed snow.

  • The Border Roads Organization (BRO) is actively using salt and urea to de-ice the road.
  • Drivers are advised to use anti-skid chains if driving non-4×4 vehicles and to maintain a significant distance from the vehicle in front.

Heavy Motor Vehicles (HMVs/Trucks)

HMVs are currently stranded at various locations. They will be allowed to move towards Jammu only after the tail-end of the LMV convoy has crossed Banihal. Truck drivers are advised not to clog the highway and wait at designated holding areas in Qazigund.

Official Warning

A senior Traffic Police official at Ramban stated: “Do not travel unless absolutely necessary. The road is treacherous near Shaitani Nallah. Please follow lane discipline; overtaking in these conditions is inviting a disaster.”
