New Delhi/Jammu: As the winter chill persists across North India, students and parents are waking up to mixed updates regarding school operations today, Monday, January 19, 2026. While most states are resuming classes after extended winter breaks, authorities in Maharashtra and Uttar Pradesh have enforced specific closures for crowd management and safety.

Meanwhile, in Jammu, schools in the Summer Zone are set to reopen today following the conclusion of the winter vacation extension.

Where Are Schools Closed Today (Jan 19)?

1. Prayagraj (Uttar Pradesh): Closed for Magh Mela Rush Schools up to Class 8 in Prayagraj will remain suspended today.

  • Reason: The closure is enforced to handle the massive ongoing rush following Mauni Amavasya (which was observed yesterday) and general crowd management for the Magh Mela.
  • Duration: The holiday is effective until January 20, 2026. Classes are expected to resume on Wednesday, January 21.

2. Pune (Maharashtra): Closed Due to Cycling Event Schools and colleges in Pune City limits will remain closed today, January 19, due to the ‘Bajaj Pune Grand Tour 2026’.

  • Reason: The district administration announced the holiday to avoid traffic chaos caused by the international cycling race, which involves major road diversions across the city.

Reopening Updates: Jammu, Punjab & Haryana

For students in North India, today marks the “Back to School” day, but with strict weather precautions.

    • Middle/High Schools: 10:00 AM to 3:30 PM (as per latest winter directives).
  • Note: This 10:00 AM start is the standard safe bet for all districts unless a specific DC order states otherwise.

Jammu (Summer Zone): Reopening Today

  • Status: OPEN.
  • The Directorate of School Education Jammu (DSEJ) winter vacation extension ended on January 17 (Saturday). Consequently, schools are resuming regular classwork from today, January 19 (Monday).
  • Advisory: Students are advised to wear full winter uniform layers as cold wave conditions continue in the plains.

Key Highlights

  • Prayagraj: CLOSED (Magh Mela/Mauni Amavasya Rush).
  • Pune: CLOSED (Cycling Race Traffic).
  • Punjab: OPEN (10:00 AM Start).
  • Jammu: OPEN (Vacations Ended).
