Srinagar: In a major step towards inclusive education, Srinagar is set to get the first state-of-the-art school for specially-abled children in the Kashmir division, Deputy Commissioner Srinagar announced on Monday. The initiative aims to bridge long-standing gaps in access to quality education and specialised support for children with disabilities across the region.

The proposed institution will be designed as a modern, inclusive learning centre, equipped with advanced facilities, trained special educators, and customised learning tools to cater to children with diverse physical and intellectual needs.

A landmark move for inclusive education

Officials said the upcoming school will focus on holistic development, combining academics with therapy-based support systems such as speech therapy, occupational therapy, physiotherapy, and life-skills training. The project is expected to significantly reduce the need for families to travel outside Kashmir for specialised education and rehabilitation services.

The announcement has been welcomed by parents and disability rights advocates, who have long demanded a dedicated, well-equipped institution for specially-abled children in the valley.

What the school will offer

According to officials, the school will feature:

  • Barrier-free infrastructure with ramps, lifts, and accessible classrooms
  • Smart classrooms and assistive learning technologies
  • Specially trained teachers and counsellors
  • Therapy and rehabilitation units within the campus
  • Safe transport and child-friendly facilities

The focus will be on creating an environment where children with special needs can learn with dignity, confidence, and equal opportunity.

Relief for families across Kashmir

At present, many families in Kashmir struggle to find appropriate schooling options for children with disabilities. The absence of specialised institutions often forces parents to either rely on limited local arrangements or seek education outside the region, which is financially and emotionally challenging.

Local education experts say the new school could become a model institution for inclusive education in Jammu and Kashmir, setting standards for similar projects in other districts.

Administration’s commitment

The district administration reiterated its commitment to strengthening social infrastructure and ensuring that development reaches all sections of society, especially the most vulnerable.

Officials said further details regarding the location, timeline, and admission process will be shared once the project moves into the implementation phase.

With this initiative, Srinagar is poised to take a significant leap forward in promoting equal access to education and inclusive growth in the Kashmir division.
