Srinagar: The picturesque snowfall in Kashmir has brought a dual scenario for residents and tourists: relief on the highways but heightened risk in the highlands. Following the recent heavy spells, the J&K Disaster Management Authority (JKDMA) has issued avalanche warnings for 11 districts. Meanwhile, the iconic Dal Lake has started freezing in its interiors, prompting safety cautions for boatmen and tourists alike.
The “Red Alert”: Avalanche Warning
Following a massive avalanche that struck near the New Truck Yard in Sonamarg at 10:12 PM on Tuesday, authorities have escalated the threat level. Fortunately, no casualties were reported in the incident.
- High Danger Level: Issued for Ganderbal district (above 2,000 meters).
- Medium/Low Danger Level: Issued for 10 additional districts, including Kupwara, Bandipora, Baramulla, Anantnag, Kulgam, Doda, Kishtwar, Poonch, Rajouri, and Ramban.
- Action: The public is strictly advised NOT to venture into slope areas. Police in Sonamarg have restricted movement toward high-risk zones following yesterday’s scare.
Dal Lake Status: Frozen & Windy
The drop in mercury has triggered the freezing of water bodies across the valley.
- Dal Lake: Interiors and margins have formed a thin layer of ice. While Shikara rides remain operational, boatmen are advised to exercise caution due to gusty winds that caused minor damage to several houseboats over the last 24 hours.
- Temperature: Srinagar recorded a low of -0.1°C, while the ski resort of Gulmarg plunged to a frigid -9.8°C.
Good News: Highway & Flights Restored
For the hundreds of tourists stranded in the valley, transport links have finally stabilized.
- NH-44 Status: FULLY OPEN. As of Wednesday evening, the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway is open for both Light Motor Vehicles (LMVs) and heavy trucks following successful snow clearance at Banihal.
- Srinagar Airport: Normal flight operations resumed this morning (Jan 28) after more than 29 flights were cancelled yesterday. The first flight landed safely at approximately 9:25 AM.
- Forecast: The MeT Department predicts dry weather across the valley from January 29 to January 31, providing a crucial window for travel.
