Srinagar/New Delhi: A significant shift in weather patterns is set to disrupt daily life across North India starting today, January 19, 2026. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a forecast warning of two fresh Western Disturbances (WDs) approaching the region in quick succession, bringing a mix of rain, snow, and thunderstorms.

While the mountains of Jammu & Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh brace for fresh snowfall, the plains—including Delhi, Punjab, and Uttar Pradesh—are preparing for a wet spell combined with dense fog.

The Forecast: Rain & Snow Timeline (Jan 19–24)

According to the MeT Department, the first Western Disturbance is impacting the Western Himalayan region starting tonight (Jan 19).

  • Jammu & Kashmir: Light to moderate snow/rain is expected at isolated higher reaches today and tomorrow (Jan 20). However, a stronger system will hit from January 22-24, bringing heavy snowfall to the Pir Panjal range, Chenab Valley, and South Kashmir.
  • Himachal & Uttarakhand: Scattered snowfall is predicted for the higher reaches, with intensity increasing by mid-week.
  • Plains (Delhi, Punjab, Haryana): While dry weather prevails today, the second WD is expected to bring light rainfall and thunderstorms between January 22 and 23. Residents should be prepared for sudden weather changes during these days.

Dense Fog & Cold Wave Warning

While the hills wait for snow, the plains are battling severe visibility issues.

  • Fog Alert: Dense to very dense fog has been reported in Jammu Division, Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, and Uttar Pradesh. Visibility dropped below 50 meters in isolated pockets this morning.
  • Cold Day Conditions: Cold wave conditions are likely to continue in isolated pockets of Himachal Pradesh and Odisha today, while Uttar Pradesh faces “Cold Day” conditions.

Advisory for Travellers

  1. Highway Status: Travellers on the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway (NH-44) must drive with extreme caution as rain may trigger shooting stones in Ramban.
  2. Flight Delays: Due to dense fog in Delhi and Jammu, early morning flights may face delays or cancellations. Check status before leaving for the airport.
  3. Tourists: Those heading to Gulmarg or Pahalgam should carry heavy woolens and waterproof gear.

Key Highlights

  • Jan 19-20: Light snow in J&K; Dense fog in Plains.
  • Jan 22-24: Heavy Snow/Rain Alert for J&K.
  • Jan 22-23: Thunderstorms likely in Delhi/Punjab/Haryana.
  • Warning: Driving hazards due to fog and slippery roads.
