As Chillai Kalan, the harshest phase of winter, ended on January 29, a fresh wave of snowfall covered south Kashmir’s Shopian district on Saturday, bringing much-needed relief to apple farmers.
The snowfall, which began early in the morning and continued into the afternoon, transformed the region into a winter wonderland.
According to officials, the district’s plains received around 3 to 4 inches of snow, while higher-altitude areas such as Heepora, Sedow, and Bohrihalan recorded approximately 10 to 12 inches.
This snowfall has put an end to a prolonged dry spell, easing the concerns of thousands of orchardists in the region.
“T he snow and the accompanying drop in temperature are essential for the orchards, as they help prevent premature flowering and early pest infestations,” said Tariq Ahmad, a prominent apple grower from the area.
