If you are travelling on an overnight train, it’s important to know the rules that Indian Railways has put in place to ensure a comfortable and disturbance-free journey for all passengers. These night-time rules typically apply between 10 pm and 6 am and help maintain discipline inside coaches.
1. Maintain Silence During Night Hours
Passengers must avoid loud conversations, music without earphones, or phone calls at high volume during the night. Any disturbance may lead to complaints from fellow travellers.
2. Lights Must Be Turned Off After 10 PM
All main lights inside the coach should be switched off after 10 pm. Only the night lamp is allowed so that passengers can sleep without disturbance.
3. Berth Courtesy Rules
If you are using a middle berth, you should fold it down only after 10 pm and allow lower berth passengers to sit comfortably before that time. After 10 pm, berths should be used strictly for sleeping purposes.
4. Ticket Checking Rules at Night
The TTE (Train Ticket Examiner) generally avoids checking tickets between 10 pm and 6 am to prevent disturbing sleeping passengers. However:
- If you board the train after 10 pm, the TTE can check your ticket anytime.
- If your ticket has already been checked earlier, you should not be disturbed during night hours.
5. No New Food Orders After 10 PM
E-catering does not accept new food orders after 10 pm. Passengers should place orders in advance if they expect to need food during the night journey.
6. Limited Online Services During the Night
Some onboard online services may not work after 10 pm. Passengers should finish necessary bookings, food orders or online tasks before night hours to avoid inconvenience.
Why These Rules Exist
These night travel rules are meant to ensure:
- A peaceful environment
- Undisturbed sleep
- Better coordination between passengers
- Smooth functioning of the coach during overnight travel
By following these guidelines, every traveler can enjoy a comfortable and respectful journey.
