New Delhi — Apple’s iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max are shaping up to deliver one of the most significant hardware overhauls the Pro lineup has seen in years, according to multiple analyst reports and supply chain leaks published in recent weeks. Indian buyers who skipped the iPhone 17 Pro series may find the 2026 upgrades difficult to ignore, with pricing expected to remain consistent with Apple’s premium tier strategy.
The global unveiling, according to reports from 9to5Mac, MacRumors, and Business Standard citing analyst Jeff Pu of GF Securities, is anticipated between September 3 and September 10, 2026, with retail availability in India likely following 10 days later.
Five reported upgrades driving the iPhone 18 Pro lineup
1. A20 Pro chip built on 2nm architecture
Apple is expected to equip both Pro models with a new A20 Pro chipset manufactured using TSMC’s 2nm process — a first for any iPhone. According to MacRumors and multiple analyst reports, the chip may deliver up to 15 per cent faster processing and up to 30 per cent greater power efficiency compared with the A19 Pro. The chipset also features an upgraded neural engine for on-device artificial intelligence tasks. The A20 Pro will reportedly use TSMC’s Wafer-Level Multi-Chip Module (WMCM) packaging, which integrates RAM directly onto the same wafer as the CPU, GPU, and Neural Engine — a change expected to improve thermal management and free up internal space.
2. Variable aperture main camera
The most talked-about camera upgrade is a variable aperture system for the primary sensor, reported to be confirmed at minimum for the Pro Max variant. Unlike fixed-aperture lenses on current iPhones, this mechanism would physically adjust the lens opening — widening in low light for greater brightness and narrowing in bright conditions for sharper exposure. This could also enable more natural background blur, reducing dependence on software-driven portrait effects. An upgraded telephoto lens with a wider aperture than the existing f/2.8 unit is also anticipated.
3. Smaller Dynamic Island with partial Face ID shift
Multiple sources indicate that Apple is working on moving some Face ID components — specifically the flood illuminator — beneath the display, enabling a noticeably smaller Dynamic Island. GF Securities analyst Jeff Pu predicts a reduction in the cutout size, while other supply chain sources estimate the Dynamic Island could shrink by approximately 35 per cent compared with the iPhone 17 Pro. While Pu has assessed the likelihood of a full under-display Face ID implementation as low for this product cycle, a partial shift remains the consensus expectation.
4. Larger battery with Apple’s C2 modem
The iPhone 18 Pro Max may carry a battery of approximately 5,200 mAh, a notable increase intended to offset the power demands of new display and modem technologies. Combined with Apple’s in-house C2 cellular modem — the successor to the C1 series — real-world battery life gains could exceed what capacity numbers alone suggest. The C2 modem is reported to be significantly more power-efficient and may also support satellite-based 5G connectivity through NR-NTN (New Radio Non-Terrestrial Networks) technology, potentially allowing for data access in dead zones.
5. New colour options and unified rear design
Apple is reportedly testing three new colour finishes — coffee brown, purple, and burgundy — for the Pro series. The rear glass design is also expected to see refinement, with a more unified appearance that improves colour blending between the glass and titanium frame.
India pricing and availability
According to reports from Digit and Analytics Insight citing industry estimates, the iPhone 18 Pro is expected to start at approximately ₹1,34,900 in India, while the iPhone 18 Pro Max could be priced around ₹1,54,900.
If accurate, this represents price stability rather than a hike. The previous iPhone 17 Pro also launched at ₹1,34,900, correcting the temporary price dip seen with the iPhone 16 Pro (which started at ₹1,19,900). Despite the increased cost of 2nm wafer fabrication, Apple appears keen to hold the starting price steady at the level established by the iPhone 15 Pro and reinstated by the iPhone 17 Pro.
Both models are expected to retain 6.3-inch and 6.9-inch OLED display sizes respectively, with a 120Hz refresh rate and peak brightness of up to 3,000 nits. Storage options may range from 256 GB to 1 TB, paired with 12 GB RAM.
The standard iPhone 18 and rumored “iPhone 18e” are not expected to launch alongside the Pro models. Reports indicate Apple will defer those releases to early 2027. Apple’s September event is expected to focus on the iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max, the iPhone 18 Air, and a separately anticipated foldable iPhone.
