MADURAI: The dust has risen, and the wait is over. The world-renowned bull-taming sport, Jallikattu, officially begins its 2026 Pongal season in Madurai district today, 15 January 2026, with the first major event at Avaniyapuram.
Coinciding with the auspicious occasion of Pongal, the event has drawn thousands of spectators and hundreds of fearless tamers ready to embrace the bulls.
The Schedule – Three Days of Adrenaline
The district administration has confirmed the schedule for the three biggest Jallikattu events in Madurai district:
- 15 January: Avaniyapuram (season opener)
- 16 January: Palamedu
- 17 January: Alanganallur (the grand finale, often attended by the Chief Minister and senior leaders)
Each event is scheduled to run roughly from 7:00 AM to 6:00 PM, with online registration and vetting of bulls and tamers completed in advance.
Big Prizes for the Bravest
This year, the stakes are higher than ever. The district administration, organisers and local donors have announced lavish prizes for the best bull tamers and the owners of top-performing bulls.
- Top Prizes: Vehicles such as cars, tractors and motorcycles, sponsored by donors and local institutions.
- Other Rewards: Gold coins, bicycles, home appliances (like mixer-grinders and cupboards) and cash rewards of up to ₹3 lakh for standout performances.
For the bulls, too, the honours are significant. Traditionally, un-tamed bulls that prove too strong for any tamer are rewarded with gifts such as dhotis, sugarcane and cash prizes for their owners, reinforcing the cultural importance of raising powerful native breeds.
High Court Order & Safety Measures
Just days ago, the Madras High Court reiterated that the iconic Jallikattu events at Avaniyapuram, Palamedu and Alanganallur must be conducted only by the State Government through the revenue department, rejecting pleas from private village committees to organise them independently.
The court cited the Tamil Nadu Regulation of Jallikattu Act and the state’s Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) for Jallikattu, noting the “international importance” of these Madurai events and stressing that villagers would take part through an advisory committee, not as separate organisers.
Safety & Security
In line with the court’s directions and SOP:
- Barricades & Enclosures: Officials have installed 8-foot-high wooden barricades, barbed-wire fencing and multiple safety enclosures around the vadivasal and spectator galleries to protect crowds and prevent unauthorised entry.
- Medical Teams: At Avaniyapuram alone, there are around 12 ambulances, two bike ambulances and dedicated first-aid centres, with medical camps staffed by orthopaedic surgeons, anaesthetists and other emergency personnel.
- Animal Welfare: Bulls and tamers are allowed to participate only after passing medical and veterinary checks, as mandated in the state SOP to prevent the use of banned substances and to ensure fitness before entering the arena.

The “Vadivasal” Roar
The atmosphere at the vadivasal – the narrow gateway from which the bulls are released into the arena – is electric. As the bulls charge out, tamers attempt to hold onto the bull’s hump for a prescribed distance or time without using ropes or weapons to qualify as successful “taming”.
For participants and spectators alike, it is a test of grit, speed and reflexes, but also of respect between man and animal, rooted deeply in Tamil agrarian culture.
