The most recent weather data from the India Meteorological Department (IMD) indicates that on Saturday at 5.30 am a low pressure region developed over the east- central Arabian Sea off the south Konkan coast. This has resulted in a change in currents; for the following four to five days, Maharashtra is expected to see extensive rainfall activity. This depression is expected by the weather agency to keep moving eastward and to probably make landfall between Ratnagiri and Dapoli. IMD has declared a red alert in these areas among these changes. The Mumbai Metropolitan Region will remain yellow alert for next three days meanwhile.
Regarding the evolution, Shubhangi Bhute of IMD Mumbai said, “A low-pressure system has formed over the Arabian Sea, which is expected to develop into a depression and move across the Ratnagiri and Dapoli areas.” These regions are therefore projected to receive significant to very severe rainfall, which calls for a red alert in Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg. For the ghat areas of Satara and Kolhapur, similarly, heavy to very heavy rain is expected. While Mumbai, Thane, Palghar will remain under a yellow alert, Raigad has an orange alert issued.
With heavy to extremely heavy rainfall at some isolated spots, the Konkan region and its adjacent ghat areas of Madhya Maharashtra are predicted to get somewhat consistent rainfall. IMD has forecast exceptionally heavy Saturday rain in several places. On Saturday and Sunday, central Maharashtra and Marathwada could see scattered, light to moderate rainfall with possibilities of thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds reaching speeds of 50–60km/h.
Relatedly, the Southwest Monsoon has formally begun over Kerala on Saturday, about a week earlier than usual starting date of June 1. Along with most of the south Arabian Sea, Lakshadweep, Kerala, Mahe, portions of Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Bay of Bengal, and even Mizoram, the monsoon has also advanced into From Karwar, Shimoga, Chennai, and other eastern and northeastern areas of India, the present Northern Limit of Monsoon (NLM) spans
Conditions are ideal for the further advance of the Southwest Monsoon into Goa and certain areas of Maharashtra within the next two to three days, thereby perhaps providing relief from pre-monsoon heat and starting the monsoon season for central India.
