Big news for taxpayers! The Modi-led Union Cabinet has approved a new Income Tax Bill that aims to simplify tax laws and replace the outdated Income Tax Act of 1961.

Key Highlights of the New Income Tax Bill

The Union Cabinet gave the green light to the new Income Tax Bill on February 7, 2025. This bill is designed to eliminate outdated provisions, simplify legal language, and make tax laws more accessible to the public without requiring expert assistance. By removing complex clauses and redundant amendments, the new bill is expected to reduce litigation and tax disputes significantly.

What Happens Next?

The approved bill will now be presented in Parliament next week. Following this, it will be sent to the Standing Committee on Finance for further review. The first phase of the current budget session ends on February 13, and discussions on the bill will likely continue when Parliament reconvenes from March 10 to April 4.

Why Was a New Bill Necessary?

The current Income Tax Act has been in place for over six decades, with amendments made over the years to accommodate economic and technological changes. However, the way people earn, invest, and conduct business has evolved dramatically, creating a need for a modernized tax law that aligns with the present socio-economic landscape.

Will the New Bill Change Tax Slabs?

The primary goal of the new bill is to simplify tax laws and compliance rather than alter tax rates. Therefore, changes in income tax slabs are unlikely, as these are usually adjusted through the Finance Act.

Notably, a similar attempt was made in 2010 when the Direct Tax Code Bill was introduced in Parliament. However, due to the change in government in 2014, that bill was ultimately scrapped.

Stay tuned for further updates as the new tax bill moves through Parliament!
