Madurai: In a major boost for southern Tamil Nadu’s road infrastructure, the Union Government has officially given the green light to expand the critical NH-44 stretch between Dindigul and Samayanallur from four lanes to six. The move is expected to end the daily “crawl” faced by thousands of vehicles approaching the Madurai outskirts from the north.

Project Status: Feasibility Study Ordered

Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari, confirmed the decision following a consistent push by Madurai MP Su. Venkatesan.

  • Immediate Action: The Minister stated that the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has been directed to immediately commence feasibility studies and prepare a Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the conversion.
  • The Catalyst: The MP had raised the urgent need for this expansion, highlighting that the current 4-lane infrastructure was buckling under a traffic volume that far exceeds its original capacity.

Why is this Upgrade Critical?

The Dindigul-Samayanallur stretch is the primary gateway for all traffic moving from Chennai, Salem, and Central Tamil Nadu toward Madurai, Virudhunagar, and the deep south.

  • Eliminating Bottlenecks: As a 4-lane highway, this route currently witnesses severe congestion where local city traffic merges with long-distance freight.
  • Safety & Speed: By expanding to six lanes, the project will separate high-speed transit from slower local movement. This is expected to significantly reduce the accident rate on what is currently one of the state’s busiest corridors.
  • Synergy with Local Projects: This expansion perfectly complements the Arapalayam-Samayanallur 2-lane road (slated for completion in February 2026), creating a comprehensive decongestion plan for Madurai’s northern entry points.

Key Milestones: What’s Next?

  1. Phase 1: NHAI conducts the technical feasibility study (Ongoing).
  2. Phase 2: Finalization of the Detailed Project Report (DPR) and cost estimation.
  3. Phase 3: Financial sanction, tendering, and ground-breaking.

FAQ Section

Q: When will the construction start?

A: Construction will commence once the DPR is finalized and funds are officially sanctioned. The project is currently in the high-priority “Study & Planning” phase.

Q: Will this reduce travel time to Madurai?

A: Yes. By adding two extra lanes, the “bottleneck effect” at Samayanallur will be eliminated, allowing for seamless entry into the city and toward the Madurai-Kanniyakumari section.
