School Holiday January 21: New Delhi: Parents and students, take note. While the extended winter vacations have officially ended in most parts of India, specific regional events and persistent weather conditions are impacting school schedules for Wednesday, January 21, 2026.

1. Confirmed Holiday: Northeast India (Statehood Day)

Schools, colleges, and government offices will remain completely closed in three Northeastern states to mark their Foundation Day.

  • States Affected: Tripura, Manipur, and Meghalaya.
  • Reason: On January 21, 1972, these three regions attained full statehood under the North Eastern Areas (Reorganisation) Act, 1971.
  • Status: CLOSED. (Public Holiday).

2. Revised Timings: Punjab (Cold Wave)

In Punjab, the government has not declared a full holiday but is enforcing strict timing changes due to dense fog and low visibility.

  • Primary Schools: Classes will commence at 10:00 AM and conclude at 3:00 PM.
  • Middle/High/Secondary Schools: Classes will run from 10:00 AM to 3:20 PM.
  • Note: Double shifts are currently suspended.
  • Disclaimer: While 3:20 PM is the standard directive, dismissal times may vary slightly (e.g., up to 3:30 PM) depending on the district. Please check your specific school diary or official group for the exact minute-by-minute schedule.

3. Uttar Pradesh: Prayagraj & Other Districts

  • Prayagraj: Schools up to Class 8 were closed until January 20 due to the huge crowds for Mauni Amavasya (Magh Mela).
    • Status for Jan 21: Schools are expected to REOPEN tomorrow unless the District Magistrate (DM) issues a fresh order extending the break due to cold weather. Parents are advised to check school WhatsApp groups tonight.
  • Noida/Ghaziabad: Schools are functioning normally, but morning assemblies may be suspended due to the chill.

4. Cleared Confusion: Maharashtra & Delhi

  • Pune (Maharashtra): Schools in Pune city were closed/had early dispersal on January 20 due to the “Grand Tour” road race. This restriction does not apply to January 21. Schools will function as per regular schedule tomorrow.
  • Delhi NCR: Physical classes have resumed for all grades. No holiday has been declared for Jan 21.
