Srinagar: The hustle and bustle of Amira Kadal has officially received a “Smart City” makeover. On Tuesday, Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha dedicated the redeveloped bridge to the public, marking another milestone in the Jhelum Riverfront Development project.
“This is not just a bridge; it is a testament to blending our rich history with modern urban needs,” the LG stated during the ceremony.
1. The Restoration: What’s New?
Once a crowded bottleneck, the old Amira Kadal (situated adjacent to the concrete vehicular bridge) has been repurposed exclusively for pedestrians.
- Cost: ₹7.70 Crore.
- Design: The reconstruction mimics the traditional wooden cantilever style of Kashmiri architecture, similar to the iconic Zero Bridge and Habba Kadal.
- Amenities:
- Gazebos & Seating Plazas: For tourists and locals to enjoy the river view.
- Smart Illumination: The bridge features dynamic tricolor lighting for evening aesthetics.
- Zero Vending Zone: The administration has strictly declared the bridge a “No Vending Zone.” To prevent the congestion that plagued the old structure, no hawker kiosks have been installed on the bridge deck itself.
2. Historical Context
Originally built in 1774-77 by the Afghan Governor Amir Khan Sher Jawan, Amira Kadal is historically cited as the “First Bridge” of Srinagar. It was constructed to connect the Sher-Gari Palace complex and has witnessed centuries of history—from the Afghan rule to the Dogra era—serving as a vital link for the city’s commercial hubs.
3. Impact on Tourism & Trade
The administration expects the bridge to mimic the success of the Zero Bridge, becoming a favorite evening spot for locals and tourists.
- Design Shift: While earlier DPRs (Detailed Project Reports) proposed 50 kiosks on the deck, the administration prioritized “unobstructed heritage views” and “congestion-free movement” in the final decision, dropping the plan to ensure a serene visitor experience.
- Riverfront Connectivity: It serves as a critical link in the 4.5 km long continuous pedestrian walkway along the Jhelum banks.
- Commercial Boost: Traders in Goni Khan and Maharaja Bazar expect increased footfall as the bridge provides a safe, congestion-free passage for shoppers moving from Lal Chowk.
