Srinagar: If you thought Gold was the only safe bet for 2026, think again. While the yellow metal is seeing a minor correction, Silver has stormed into the new year with a massive rally, crossing historic milestones on the Multi Commodity Exchange (MCX).

As of today, January 2, 2026, Silver futures have surged past the ₹2.37 Lakh per kg mark, driven by an explosion in industrial demand. For investors in J&K who traditionally hoard gold for weddings, the question now is: Is it time to switch to Silver?

The first trading sessions of 2026 have shown a clear divergence in performance.

AssetCurrent Price (Approx)Trend (Jan 2026)
Silver (1 kg)₹2,37,732▲ Bullish (Up ~1%)
Gold (10 gms)₹1,35,529▬ Flat / Neutral

Why is Silver Skyrocketing?

Unlike Gold, which is a “fear asset” (bought when people are scared of war or inflation), Silver is an “industrial beast.” The current rally is fueled by three specific triggers:

  1. The Green Energy Boom: Silver is a critical component in Solar Panels and Electric Vehicles (EVs). With India and China pushing aggressively for 2030 green targets, the physical demand for silver has outstripped supply.
  2. China’s Export Ban: Reports indicate China (a major producer) has restricted silver exports starting Jan 1, 2026, creating a global supply shock.
  3. Tech Demand: The 5G and AI hardware boom requires high-conductivity connectors, further draining global silver inventories.

Expert Opinion: “High Risk, High Reward”

Local bullion traders in Hari Singh High Street warn that while Silver is profitable, it is volatile.

“Silver is not for the faint-hearted. It jumps ₹2,000 one day and falls ₹1,500 the next. Gold is steady. We advise families to keep 80% in Gold for safety and 20% in Silver for growth,” says a senior member of the Srinagar Jewelers Association.

Investment Verdict for 2026

  • Buy Gold If: You want safety, are planning a wedding, or want to hedge against rupee depreciation.
  • Buy Silver If: You are looking for aggressive returns (15-20%) and can stomach high volatility. The target for Silver is now speculated to touch ₹2.50 Lakh/kg by mid-2026.
