SRINAGAR — If you are waiting for a white blanket to cover the plains of Srinagar and Anantnag, you might have to wait a lot longer. In a forecast that has dampened the spirits of snow lovers and apple growers alike, the Meteorological Department (MeT) has predicted that there will be “no major snowfall” in the Kashmir Valley until January 20, 2026.
While the higher reaches of Gulmarg and Sonamarg received a light dusting on New Year’s Day, the plains remain dry and cold. This prolonged dry spell during Chillai Kalan—the 40-day period of harshest winter—is raising serious concerns about the region’s water table and agricultural output for the coming year.
The Forecast: Sun & Cold Nights
According to the latest update from the MeT Centre Srinagar, the weather pattern shows no strong Western Disturbance (WD) approaching the region.
- Jan 2 to Jan 6: Weather will remain generally dry. Days might be sunny, but night temperatures will plummet further below freezing.
- Jan 7 to Jan 9: A “feeble” Western Disturbance might bring cloudy skies and very light snow to isolated higher reaches, but it won’t be enough to disrupt daily life or cover the plains.
- Till Jan 20: The overall outlook remains dry. .
Why Is This Worrying?
For tourists, dry weather means clear roads. But for locals, it spells trouble.
- Apple Orchards: The horticulture sector relies on heavy snow during Chillai Kalan (Dec 21 – Jan 30) to provide deep soil moisture and the necessary “chilling hours” for a good apple harvest. A dry January could mean smaller fruit size and disease outbreaks in summer.
- Water Crisis: Snow acts as a natural reservoir. If glaciers aren’t replenished now, the Valley could face a severe water shortage in June and July 2026.
Tourist Update: Where is the Snow?
Don’t cancel your trip yet! While Srinagar is dry, the ski resorts are still operational.
- Gulmarg: Has received about 6 inches of fresh snow recently and is open for skiing.
- Sonamarg: Received light snow, but the road is slippery.
- Pahalgam: Higher reaches are white, but the main market is clear.
