Slow Movement on NH-44: Key Points Travelers Must Know
Between 09 December, 1600 hrs, and 10 December, 1600 hrs, slow movement was reported on several stretches of NH-44 (NHW) because of:
- Single-lane traffic at Balinalla, Dewal, Nashri–Dalwas, and Marog–Kishtwari Pather
- Breakdown of three heavy motor vehicles (HMVs)
- Increased congestion caused by narrow stretches and winter road conditions
Authorities strongly recommend that LMV passengers and small vehicle operators travel during daytime. Night travel may cause inconvenience due to heavy vehicle movement between Nashri Tunnel and Navyug Tunnel, along with the seasonal migration of nomadic groups moving towards Jammu.
Commuters are also urged to maintain strict lane discipline, as overtaking and driving in the wrong lane can rapidly worsen congestion in sensitive areas.
Traffic Movement Plan for NH-44 (Jammu–Srinagar National Highway)
Subject to fair weather and road conditions:
- LMVs (Passenger), HPSVs, private cars, and goods-carrying HMVs will be allowed from both sides, i.e., Jammu to Srinagar and vice versa.
- TCU Jammu and TCU Srinagar will coordinate with TCU Ramban to monitor road conditions in real-time.
- Travelers are advised to stay updated on any sudden changes due to weather or road blockages.
Security Forces Convoy Movement
Security Forces convoys will also be allowed to move from both ends, provided:
- Road and weather conditions are favorable
- Clearance is obtained from TCU Ramban before movement
Convoy timings will be coordinated to avoid interference with civilian traffic to ensure smooth and safe passage for all.
Kishtwar–Sinthan–Anantnag Road (NH-244): LMVs Allowed in Daytime Window
The Kishtwar–Sinthan–Anantnag route will remain open for LMVs only, after clearance from NHIDCL.
- Movement allowed from both directions
- Timings: 1000 hrs to 1500 hrs
- Passing points: PP Parana and PP Daksum
Travel outside the permitted window will not be allowed due to safety concerns and ongoing winter road assessment.
SSG Road (Srinagar–Sonamarg–Gumari): Regulated Movement in Fixed Slots
The SSG Road will operate in a strictly regulated manner, subject to favorable conditions and clearance from BRO.
Traffic Timings
- Minamarg → Srinagar:
- LMVs followed by HMVs
- Allowed from 0500 hrs to 1000 hrs
- Sonamarg → Kargil:
- LMVs followed by HMVs
- Allowed from 1130 hrs to 1730 hrs
No vehicle will be permitted to move after the designated cut-off timings.
Security Forces convoys must plan their movement so that they do not disrupt civilian traffic moving in either direction.
Mughal Road: LMVs Allowed from Both Sides, Limited HMV Movement
Movement on Mughal Road is permitted after approval from GREF.
LMVs (Passenger/Private Cars):
Allowed from both sides—Jammu side via Poonch and Kashmir side via Shopian.
Timings
- Behramgala (Baffliaz): 0600 hrs to 1730 hrs
- Herpora (Shopian): 0600 hrs to 1700 hrs
These timings are as per the District Magistrate Poonch advisory (Order No. DMP/J/9291-9318 dated 31-08-2025).
HMVs (Six-Tyre Only):
- Allowed only from Shopian towards Poonch
- HMVs WILL NOT be allowed from Poonch towards Mughal Road
TCU Jammu and TCU Srinagar will update commuters on any change in timings or road conditions.
