NEW DELHI: The wait for India’s modern overnight Vande Bharat experience is over. Indian Railways will launch the country’s first-ever Vande Bharat Sleeper train on 17 January 2026, connecting Howrah (Kolkata) and Kamakhya (Guwahati) under the Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) zone.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to flag off the inaugural Howrah–Kamakhya Vande Bharat Sleeper Express, marking a major upgrade to premium overnight travel beyond the traditional Rajdhani Express network.
In parallel, the Railway Board has issued a new circular for these trains, making it clear they will operate with no RAC or waiting list and a minimum chargeable distance of 400 km, with dynamic, distance-based premium fares.
Jan 17 Launch: First Route & Key Features
The inaugural service — train numbers 27575/27576 Howrah–Kamakhya Vande Bharat Sleeper Express — will:
- Run between Howrah Junction (HWH) and Kamakhya Junction (KYQ), serving Kolkata and Guwahati.
- Cover ~968 km in about 14 hours with a fully air-conditioned, AC-only sleeper configuration.
Key onboard features include:
- Semi high-speed EMU trainset (no separate locomotive) with faster acceleration than Rajdhani-type trains.
- Modern sleeper coaches (1AC, 2AC, 3AC) with improved berths and interiors.
- Automatic doors, advanced safety systems and better ride comfort, tuned for operational speeds up to 160 kmph on suitable sections.
New Rules: No RAC & 400 km Minimum Fare
The Railway Board’s 9 January 2026 circular lays down the following norms for all Vande Bharat Sleeper trains:
No RAC / No Waiting List
- Only confirmed tickets will be issued.
- There will be no RAC, waitlisted or partially confirmed tickets on Vande Bharat Sleeper trains.
- All berths are opened for booking at the start of the Advance Reservation Period (ARP).
Minimum Chargeable Distance: 400 km
- Fares are calculated on a per-km basis, but passengers must pay for at least 400 km, even on shorter trips.
- This is meant to maintain speed and reduce frequent short-distance boarding and alighting on a premium long-distance service.
Official Base Fares (excluding GST)
- AC 3-Tier (3AC): ₹2.40 per km
- AC 2-Tier (2AC): ₹3.10 per km
- AC First Class (1AC): ₹3.80 per km
Minimum fares for up to 400 km (before GST):

GST is charged separately as applicable. Longer journeys are charged on the same per-km basis beyond 400 km.
The Kashmir Angle: What About the Delhi–Srinagar Vande Bharat Sleeper?
For Jammu & Kashmir, the big talking point is whether the Vande Bharat Sleeper will soon run directly between New Delhi and Srinagar.
Over the past two years:
- The Udhampur–Srinagar–Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL) has been fully completed, with all sections — including the Chenab Bridge and T-50 tunnel — opened to traffic by mid-2025.
- Vande Bharat Express (daytime, chair-car) services have already been introduced on the Katra–Srinagar route via the new link.
Earlier media reports in 2024 had speculated that a New Delhi–Srinagar Vande Bharat Sleeper could start by January 2025, but subsequent coverage from Railway sources indicated that this plan was delayed and that no fresh launch date has been officially notified.
Current status (as of January 2026):
- There is no official Railway Board notification announcing a start date or timetable for a Delhi–Srinagar Vande Bharat Sleeper.
- Railways is presently focused on rolling out the first Sleeper rake on the Howrah–Kamakhya route; future deployment on the Delhi–Srinagar sector remains proposed but unscheduled in any formal circular or timetable.
