New Delhi: The New Year celebrations have hit a foggy wall for thousands of travelers.
A blanket of dense fog has engulfed North India today, January 1, 2026, reducing visibility to near zero in Delhi, Punjab, and Uttar Pradesh. This has triggered massive disruptions in air and rail traffic, leaving thousands stranded at airports and stations on the first day of the year.
1. Delhi Airport: ‘Zero Visibility’ Alert
The Indira Gandhi International Airport (DEL) has activated CAT-III ILS (Instrument Landing System) procedures since 5:00 AM.
- Flight Status: Over 120 flights (International & Domestic) have been delayed.
- Diversions: At least 15 flights scheduled to land in Delhi were diverted to Jaipur and Ahmedabad this morning due to “Zero Visibility” on the runway.
- Advisory: Airlines (IndiGo, Air India, Vistara) have issued “Travel Advisories” asking passengers to check their flight status before leaving for the airport to avoid overcrowding at terminals.
2. Train Status: Rajdhani & Shatabdi Late
The fog has severely hit the [suspicious link removed] network.
- Delays: More than 50 trains arriving in Delhi are running late by 4 to 12 hours.
- List of Affected Trains:
- Howrah-New Delhi Rajdhani: Late by 8 hours.
- Jammu Mail: Late by 6 hours.
- Vande Bharat Express (Varanasi-Delhi): Rescheduled.
- Cancellations: Northern Railway has announced the full cancellation of 12 passenger trains for today due to operational safety.
3. Impact on Kashmir Tourists
Tourists planning to fly to Srinagar for the snowfall should be prepared for delays.
- While Srinagar weather is clear, flights originating from Delhi are delayed. This creates a “knock-on” effect, meaning flights leaving Srinagar will also be late.
- Advice: If you have a connecting flight from Delhi tonight, ensure you have a sufficient time buffer.
4. Driving Warning: Yamuna Expressway Peril
Police have issued a “Drive Slow” warning for the Yamuna Expressway and Agra-Lucknow Expressway, where visibility is less than 50 meters. Hazard lights (blinkers) are a must if you are driving on highways today.

As per DGCA rules, if a flight is delayed by more than 6 hours, airlines must offer a full refund or an alternate flight. However, “Bad Weather” is considered force majeure, so compensation (cash) is usually not given.
IMD predicts that visibility will improve only after 11:00 AM as the sun comes out. The fog is likely to return with higher intensity tonight.
