A Simpler and More Transparent Tax System
The Modi government has taken a significant step toward tax reform by approving a new Income Tax Bill that aims to replace the six-decade-old Income Tax Act of 1961. This modernized legislation seeks to simplify direct tax laws, making them easier to understand, eliminating ambiguities, and reducing legal disputes. Importantly, the bill does not introduce any new tax burdens and focuses on clarity and accessibility.
On Friday, the Union Cabinet, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, officially approved the bill. According to sources, it will be introduced in Parliament next week and subsequently sent to the Standing Committee on Finance for further review. The first phase of the ongoing budget session concludes on February 13, with the next session running from March 10 to April 4.
Easier Tax Laws for Everyone
Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, in her budget speech, emphasized the need for a straightforward and transparent tax system. The new Income Tax Bill is designed to be free from outdated amendments and complex legal jargon, ensuring that taxpayers can understand it without needing expert assistance.
₹8,800 Crore Boost for ‘Skill India’ Program
In addition to tax reforms, the Union Cabinet has approved an ₹8,800 crore budget for restructuring and continuing the ‘Skill India’ program until 2026. This move aligns with the government’s vision of building a future-ready, technology-driven workforce.
Information and Broadcasting Minister Ashwini Vaishnav announced the decision, highlighting the government’s commitment to industry-oriented and demand-driven skill development.
Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vikas Yojana Integrated into Skill India
The government has also integrated Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vikas Yojana 4.0 (PMKVY 4.0), Pradhan Mantri National Apprenticeship Promotion Scheme (PM-NAPS), and Jan Shikshan Sansthan (JSS) Scheme under the broader Skill India Programme. This consolidation aims to streamline skill development initiatives and enhance training accessibility across the country.
With these initiatives, the Modi government continues to simplify tax laws and empower India’s workforce, ensuring a more efficient and transparent economic landscape.
