Bengaluru/New Delhi: As India wakes up to 2026, the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) is gearing up to make history.
According to the official mission timeline shared by the Union Minister of Science & Technology, January 2026 is the scheduled window for the launch of Gaganyaan-1 (G1)—the first uncrewed test flight of India’s ambitious Human Spaceflight Programme.
While the exact launch date is yet to be announced by ISRO, sources at the Satish Dhawan Space Centre (SDSC) in Sriharikota suggest that final integration checks are underway.
What is the Gaganyaan-1 Mission?
Before sending Indian astronauts (Gaganyauts) to space, ISRO needs to prove that its rocket and crew module are safe. Gaganyaan-1 is the first of two critical test flights.
- The Passenger: No humans will be on board. Instead, a humanoid robot named “Vyommitra” (Friend of the Sky) will fly in the crew module.
- The Task: Vyommitra will simulate human functions, monitor life support systems, and send data back to Earth to ensure the cabin is safe for humans.
- The Rocket: The heavy-lift launcher LVM3 (Launch Vehicle Mark-3) will be used for this historic lift-off.
Vyommitra: The “Lady Robot” Who Goes First
The highlight of this mission is the Vyommitra Robot. Designed by ISRO’s Inertial Systems Unit, she can:
- Operate switch panels.
- Monitor module parameters.
- Communicate with ground control in Hindi and English.
- Survive the extreme vibrations and heat of re-entry.
Why Is This Mission Critical?
If Gaganyaan-1 is successful this month, it paves the way for the manned mission scheduled for late 2026 or early 2027. A failure here could push India’s dream of sending a human to space back by years.
Other ISRO Missions in Jan 2026
Apart from Gaganyaan, reports suggest ISRO is also prepping for the launch of a new Navigation Satellite (NVS series) later this month to strengthen the NavIC system (India’s own GPS).
What Happens Next?
- Launch Date Announcement: ISRO Chairman S. Somanath is expected to address the media in the first week of January to confirm the final launch date.
- Watch Live: The launch will be streamed live on ISRO’s YouTube channel and Doordarshan.
