SRINAGAR — Travel on the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway (NH-44) in January 2026 remains challenging due to fresh snowfall and narrow stretches. While two-way traffic has been restored, movement continues to be slow at key sectors like Dalwas and Mehar due to poor road conditions and traffic congestion. Authorities have issued a strict advisory recommending daytime travel only. Here is the comprehensive status report for January 7, 2026.

Key Highlights:

  • NH-44 Status: Open for Two-Way Traffic (Subject to fair weather).
  • Congestion Points: Dalwas, Mehar-Cafeteria, Ramban, and Nachlana (Single lane).
  • Closed Routes: Mughal Road and Sinthan-Kishtwar Road are closed due to heavy snow accumulation.
  • Advisory: Avoid night travel; beware of general winter hazards like shooting stones in Ramban sector.

Jammu-Srinagar NH-44 Traffic Conditions:

1. Two-Way Traffic Open on NH-44

As of January 7, 2026, authorities have allowed two-way traffic for both Light Motor Vehicles (LMVs) and Heavy Motor Vehicles (HMVs).

The Challenge: Despite being open, the highway is witnessing frequent jams. The stretch between Nashri and Banihal is operating as a single lane at multiple spots due to ongoing construction and debris clearing.

Travel Advisory: Commuters are advised to stick to NH-44, as it is currently the only viable route to Srinagar. Do not attempt the Jammu-Poonch route as the connecting Mughal Road is closed.

2. Snowfall & Roadblocks Affecting Alternative Routes

While NH-44 is functional, all major alternative routes connecting the Kashmir Valley to Jammu are shut due to heavy snowfall in the higher reaches.

  • Mughal Road (Shopian-Poonch): CLOSED. Over 3-4 feet of snow has accumulated at Peer Ki Gali (estimated).
  • Sinthan-Kishtwar (NH-244): CLOSED. Snow clearance operations are underway, but the road remains dangerous.
  • Srinagar-Sonamarg-Gumri (Zojila): Regulated. Only vehicles with anti-skid chains are allowed, subject to BRO clearance.

3. Travel Tips for Safe Passage

Given the slippery road conditions, the Traffic Police have issued the following guidelines:

  • Daytime Only: Do not travel at night. The risk of shooting stones increases after sunset, and visibility drops drastically.
  • Lane Discipline: Do not overtake in the Marog and Mehar sectors. A single wrong move can block the highway for hours.
  • Vehicle Check: Ensure your heating system, fog lights, and wipers are working perfectly before starting the journey.

4. Traffic Plan for January 7, 2026

  • LMVs: Allowed from both Jammu and Srinagar.
  • HMVs: Allowed from both sides but will move in a regulated manner after LMVs have cleared the critical zones.

Route Suggestion: Possible alternative: Take Udhampur-Gool if Ramban is congested (LMVs Only), but confirm with traffic control before departure.

FAQs:

Q: Is the Jammu-Srinagar highway open today?

A: Yes, NH-44 is open for two-way traffic on January 7, 2026, but expect delays in the Ramban sector due to single-lane stretches.

Q: Is Mughal Road open for traffic?

A: No, Mughal Road is completely closed due to heavy snow accumulation at Peer Ki Gali.

Q: Can we travel at night on NH-44?

A: No. Authorities strongly advise against night travel due to the risk of shooting stones and poor visibility.

Conclusion:

The Jammu-Srinagar National Highway (NH-44) is your only viable option for travel between the two capitals in January 2026. With Mughal Road and Sinthan Top closed, the pressure on NH-44 is high. Plan your journey for the daytime, carry warm essentials, and drive cautiously through the landslide-prone Ramban sector.
