Katra/Jammu: The Trikuta Hills are echoing with “Jai Mata Di” as a record-breaking number of devotees have reached Katra to seek blessings on the first day of 2026.
According to the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board (SMVDSB), over 50,000 pilgrims have already started their trek towards the Bhawan since last night, prompting authorities to enforce strict crowd control measures.
1. RFID Cards Mandatory: No Card, No Yatra
To prevent a stampede-like situation (recalling past incidents), the Board has made RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) registration 100% mandatory.
- The Rule: No pilgrim is allowed to cross the Ban Ganga check post without a valid RFID card.
- Where to get it: Pilgrims must collect their cards from the registration counters at Katra Bus Stand or Railway Station before starting the trek.
- Warning: Police are turning back anyone trying to use old paper slips or walking without the RFID tag.
2. Skywalk Usage Compulsory for Return
The newly operational Skywalk is playing a critical role today.
- Traffic Plan: To separate the incoming and outgoing crowds, the Shrine Board is directing all returning pilgrims to use the distinct Skywalk path near the Bhawan. This ensures there is no collision between those waiting for Darshan and those leaving.
3. Helicopter Service Suspended Due to Fog
Bad news for those who booked chopper rides.
- Status: Due to “Zero Visibility” and dense fog in the hills this morning, helicopter services from Katra to Sanjichhat have been suspended temporarily.
- Refund: Pilgrims with confirmed bookings will receive a full refund if the service remains cancelled for the day. However, the Battery Car service on the new Tarakote track is running smoothly.
4. “Atka Aarti” Booking Full for January
The demand is so high that online slots for the special Atka Aarti are reportedly fully booked for the entire month of January 2026.
- Advice: Devotees are advised not to fall for touts offering “VIP Darshan” tickets, as the Board has issued a warning against such scams.
