New Delhi: Did you receive a WhatsApp message this morning promising a “Free 3-Month Mobile Recharge” as a New Year 2026 gift from the Government or a Telecom company?
STOP. Do not click it.
The Press Information Bureau (PIB) Fact Check unit and cybersecurity experts have issued an urgent warning today, January 1, 2026, regarding a massive phishing campaign targeting Indian mobile users under the guise of New Year celebrations.
1. The Viral Message
The fake message, which is being forwarded millions of times today, typically reads:
“Happy New Year 2026! 🥳 The Government is giving Free 3-Month Recharge to all Indian users to celebrate the Digital India milestone. Offer valid only for today (Jan 1). Click here to activate: [Suspicious Link]”
2. The Danger: What Happens If You Click?
Cybersecurity firms warn that this is a classic Phishing Scam.
- Data Theft: The link takes you to a fake website that looks like an official Jio/Airtel or Gov portal. It asks for your Name, Number, and OTP.
- Bank Fraud: Once you enter the OTP, fraudsters can compromise your linked bank account or wallet.
- Malware: In some cases, clicking the link automatically downloads “Screen Sharing” malware (like Pink WhatsApp or remote access trojans) onto your Android device.
3. Government’s Clarification
- Official Stance: The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has clarified that NO such free recharge scheme has been announced by the government or any telecom operator for New Year 2026.
- Action: The Indian Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-In) is working to block these malicious domains, but new ones keep popping up.
4. How to Stay Safe Today
- Check the URL: Official government sites always end in .gov.in or .nic.in. Scams usually look like gov-free-offer.xyz or https://www.google.com/search?q=recharge-2026.com.
- Don’t Forward: If you receive this message from a friend or family group, reply immediately warning them it is a fake.
- Report It: You can report such messages by forwarding them to the official scam reporting number on WhatsApp or filing a complaint at [suspicious link].
FAQs
You are mostly safe, but it is recommended to run a Virus Scan on your phone immediately. Also, check if any unknown app was installed in the background.
Jio usually launches a “Happy New Year Plan” (long-term validity), but it is a paid plan available on the MyJio app. They do not give “Free” recharge links via WhatsApp forwards.
If money was deducted, call 1930 (National Cyber Crime Helpline) immediately within the “Golden Hour” to freeze the transaction.
